Stardew Valley multiplayer is in QA now, here's how it will play and more details

The best farming game is getting even better - here's what we know about Stardew Valley's multiplayer update.

Stardew Valley's multiplayer mode is getting closer and closer to a virtual farm near you. Lead developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone shared on Twitter that the new update is currently in the testing phase, which bodes well for progress on the ambitious new feature.

Stardew Valley multiplayer is in QA and bugs are being fixed at a very good pace!

Multiplayer support is the marquee new feature for Stardew Valley's upcoming 1.3.0 update, and thankfully we already know quite a bit about how it will work. Read on for more pertinent details from the developers themselves about farming with friends!

How many people can play Stardew Valley multiplayer?

Up to four players will be able to participate in a single game of Stardew Valley multiplayer.

4-player Stardew Valley LAN party at my house... it's really fun. It still needs some work, but the underlying network code is solid. Being in the same room and yelling at each other about what to do next, or if anyone has any stone, is great fun. Can't wait to share this

Soon after you start the game or install the update, Robin (the carpenter) will offer to build up to three additional cabins on your farm. This is where the other players - AKA the farmhands - live. They're free to wander around town and can do almost every activity available in single player, including farming, fishing, and cave delving. Exceptions include deciding when to sleep, when to begin festivals, and other big decisions that impact everyone playing; those remain the responsibility of the farm owner.

Do you need to start over for Stardew Valley multiplayer?

Nope! No need to give up the rustic perfection of your current save in order to try out multiplayer. You can accept new farmhands onto existing farms. You will have to clear out some space for the farmhand cabins, of course.

I am PSYCHED. Do you have to start a new game to do multiplayer, or can you bring guests in on an existing save?

The developers have only announced plans for peer-to-peer multiplayer so far. Given how the host player is the only one who can go to sleep and start a new day, it wouldn't make much sense for play via always-on servers anyway.

Can you get married in Stardew Valley multiplayer?

Yep! You can totally get hitched with another player, on top of the standard NPC romances.

Is there any plans for marriage between players? My fiance and I would love to marry each other in game! Regardless, thank you for working so hard on this game.

Don't expect it to be as easy as both parties selecting "I do." Though you won't need a Mermaid Pendant to get hitched to your fellow players, Concerned Ape is aiming to make inter-player marriage take about as much effort and investment to attain as player-NPC matrimony. And yes, this probably means you can get divorced too, in case things don't work out. Though you will still live on the same farm. Awkward.

What platforms are getting Stardew Valley multiplayer?

The multiplayer update is rolling out to all forms of Stardew Valley.

Specific release dates will vary, but eventually everyone will get multiplayer (and the other stuff coming in the update, to boot).

When is Stardew Valley multiplayer coming out?

According to this official blog post, Concerned Ape is hoping to put a beta version of the multiplayer update out on PC in spring. The final release date is currently unspecified, however we do know PC players will get the full version first as well. Hopefully console players won't have to wait long after that.

Will Stardew Valley multiplayer be paid DLC?

The Stardew Valley multiplayer update will be free for everyone who owns Stardew Valley now or in the future. It would not be at all unreasonable to charge extra for this huge feature update, but the devs are just sweet like that.
